British People who Helped in Japan's Modernization

Thomas Blake Glover was a Scottish merchant who started the trading company Glover and Co. in Nagasaki. He exported green tea and raw silk and imported steamships, warships and weapons. He built the first modern ship-repair facility incorporating steam engines in Japan and opened a Western-style coal mine that also incorporated steam engines. These and other endeavors of his greatly contributed to the rapid modernization of Japan from the end of the Edo Period to the Meiji Period.
The Glover House, the oldest Western-style wooden building in Japan, still stands in Glover Garden as part of the UNESCO World Heritage “Sites of Japan’s Meiji Industrial Revolution” registered in 2015.
