Sun Yat-sen, Umeya Shokichi and Nagasaki

Umeya Shokichi (1868-1934) was a Nagasaki-born businessman.
Sun Yat-sen was the central leader of the Xinhai Revolution, the starting point for the modernization of China. Umeya provided material and moral support to Sun throughout his life and was a core Japanese presence providing him with support. This was in keeping with a promise Umeya made when he was young: “You supply the army and I will provide financial support.”
The characteristics of Nagasaki, which historically has had strong ties with China, gave rise to Umeya’s excellent international sensibilities and spirit of enterprise. His wife Toku, who was born on the Iki Island of Nagasaki, also supported the two men’s friendship that transcended national borders.
