Music Festival that is Loved by Locals and is the Envy of the World
Classical-music superstar Maria Martha Argerich is one of the top-rated pianists. She is an honorary citizen of Oita Prefecture and has been conferred the Order of the Rising Sun by the Japanese government. She was named general director of the Argerich Music Festival and Encounter in Beppu in 1996. Since the first festival two years later, it has been held every year in early summer in Oita Prefecture. It is the only music festival where Argerich appears regularly outside of her native Argentina.

Shiiki Argerich’s Haus
In 2015, Shiiki Masakazu, honorary director of the the Argerich Arts Foundation, created this haus as proof of his respect and deep affection for Martha Argerich, who has given the world wonderful musical experiences. It is used as a palace of classical music.
