Setting of the Opera "Madame Butterfly"
"Madama Butterfly" is an opera written by Italian composer Giacomo Puccini based on the play "Madame Butterfly" by American Playwright David Belasco. It is set in Nagasaki and was performed for the first time at La Scala in Milan in 1904. Said to be one of Puccini’s three great operas, it continues to be popularly produced in Europe and the United States. In Japan, it is well-known as a work with the country as its setting.
Set in Nagasaki, it tells the story of the tragic love of a Japanese girl named Butterfly for an American Navy lieutenant named Pinkerton. The song "One Fine Day," which Butterfly sings while waiting for Pinkerton, is the most famous from the opera.

The Higashi-yamate District is said to be the setting for “Madama Butterfly.” Higashi-yamate No. 12 Hall, a Western-style building in the district, displays historical materials related to a private school built during the time when the area was a foreign settlement.
