Interaction with the Joseon Missions (Part 1)

During the Edo period, whenever a new Tokugawa shogun took over, a diplomatic party called a Joseon mission brought a letter of congratulations from the Korean Dynasty and then carried a message back from the Tokugawa shogun.
One group consisted of between 300 and 500 people, centered on a main envoy, a vice-envoy, and a document official, and also included Confucian scholars, doctors and artists. During the more than 260 years of the Tokugawa shogunate, these missions traveled to Japan twelve times, deepening scholarly and cultural exchange. The Fukuoka Domain, through which the missions passed, entertained them eleven of the twelve times on Ainoshima.
