Interaction with the Joseon Missions (Part 2)

The Joseon missions were diplomatic parties sent to Japan by the Korean dynasty during the Edo period.
Toyotomi Hideyoshi’s Imjin War (Japanese invasions of Korea between 1592 to 1598) worsened relations between the two countries, but as a result of tenacious negotiations by the Tsushima Domain, which had received a decree from Tokugawa Ieyasu, diplomatic relations were restored. Joseon missions traveled to Japan 12 times between 1607 and 1811, deepening exchange in various fields including academics, the arts, industry and culture.
In 2017, Japanese and Korean materials related to the Joseon missions were registered as part of UNESCO’s Memory of the World Programme under the name “Documents on Joseon Tongsinsa/Chosen Tsushinshi: The History of Peace Building and Cultural Exchanges between Korea and Japan from the 17th to 19th Century.”
