The Creation of Kudara no Sato

There is a legend that during the Nara period, some 1,300 years ago, after the kingdom of Baekje on the Korean Peninsula fell, the royalty took flight to Japan and drifted ashore at Miyazaki. King Teika settled in Nangomikado, Misato-cho, and his eldest son King Fukuchi settled in Hiki, Kijo-cho. Local people pass on this story as “the legend of the Baekje royalty.”
Based on this legend, a facility called “Kudara no Sato” (Baekje village) is being created in Misato-cho. As part of this attraction, buildings called the “Nishi no Shosoin” and the “Kudara no Yakata” were built.
Every year at the end of January, which corresponds to December on the old Japanese calendar, there is a procession from Hiki Shrine, which enshrines King Fukuchi, to Mikado Shrine, which enshrines King Teika. This is part of the Shiwasu Matsuri, a rare type of festival in Japan. It re-creates the annual meeting between father and son.

Nearby is the Nishi no Shosoin Warehouse, which displays precious treasures including a bronze mirror with 24 surfaces that belonged to Baekje royalty and is said to be identical to an imperial treasure in the Nara Shosoin.
