About Us

With a population of around 1.5 million, Fukuoka city is the fifth largest city in Japan. It is located at around 900km west of Tokyo, in the northern part of Kyushu island and is the largest city in Southern Japan. Distance from Fukuoka to Busan, South Korea, is around 200km and that from Fukuoka to Shanghai, China, is around 850km. Also, Fukuoka is the seat of Fukuoka prefecture. The prefecture population is about 5.1 million as of 2014, with the density of about 1,020 people/km2.

Fukuoka National Highways Office, hereafter Fukuoka Office, is one of the branch offices of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT), the Government of Japan. This office is in charge of planning, constructing and managing the national highway systems in the Fukuoka metropolitan area and in South Fukuoka generally. The systems include vehicle roads, pedestrian roads, bike lanes, bike roads, road environments, road safety, and other related matters. Also, this office is responsible for restoring and rehabilitating roads and road facilities damaged by natural disaster and by other catastrophe.

The projects’ total budget for FY2017 is approx. 18 billion yen, roughly 160 million USD. The General Manager of Fukuoka office is Dr. Katsuya Abe. There are 135 staff members as of April 1st, 2017. The office has 3 deputy general managers and 12 division directors. Their directorates are General Affairs Division, Accounting Division, First Public Land Acquisition Division, Second Public Land Acquisition Division, Project Management Division, Planning Division, Quality Control Division, First Road Management Division, Second Road Management Division, Road Maintenance Division, Road Safety Division, and Disaster Prevention Information Division. Also, there are 4 local maintenance offices: Central Fukuoka; West Fukuoka; Kurume; and Setaka. These are responsible for road maintenance in their respective areas. Additionally, there is a construction office executing the Ariake Seashore Highway project.
